Formic acid (94%)

Product name Formic acid
Alias Formic acid
CAS number 64-18-6
EINECS number 200-001-8
Molecular formula CH2O2
Molecular weight 46.03
Physical and chemical properties Flammability. It can be freely miscible with water, ethanol, ether and glycerol, and most polar organic solvents are miscible, and also has a certain solubility in hydrocarbons. Relative density (d204): 1.220. The heat of combustion was 254.4 kJ/mol, the critical temperature was 306.8 °C, and the critical pressure was 8.63 MPa. Flash point 68.9 °C (open cup). The density is 1.22, and the relative vapor density is 1.59 (air = 1).
Formic acid with high concentrations tends to freeze in winter.
Forbidden compounds: strong oxidants, strong alkalis, active metal powders.
Dangerous characteristics: its vapor and air form an explosive mixture, in case of open flame, high heat energy caused by combustion explosion. It can react with strong oxidants.
Solubility: miscible with water, insoluble in hydrocarbons, miscible in alcohol.
Uses

1. Pharmaceutical industry: caffeine, metamizole sodium, aminopyrine, aminophylline, theobromine chips, vitamin B1, metronidazole, mebendazole.
2. Pesticide industry: rust nin, triazolone, tricyclazole, triamazole, triazolephos, paclobutrazole, enbutrazole, insecticidal ether, dicofol, etc.
3. Chemical industry: calcium formate, sodium formate, ammonium formate, potassium formate, ethyl formate, barium formate, dimethylformamide, formamide, rubber antioxidant, pentaerythritol, neopentylene glycol, epoxy soybean oil, octyl epoxy soybean oleate, pivaleryl chloride, paint stripper, phenolic resin, pickling steel plate, etc.
4. Leather industry: tanning preparations, deashing agents and neutralizing agents for leather.
5. Rubber industry: natural rubber coagulant.
6. Others: can also manufacture printing and dyeing mordant, fiber and paper dyeing agent, treatment agent, plasticizer, food preservation and animal feed additives.
7. Preparation of CO. Chemical formula: HCOOH=(concentrated H2SO4 catalysis) heating = CO+H2O
8. Reducing agent. Determination of arsenic, bismuth, aluminum, copper, gold, indium, iron, lead, manganese, mercury, molybdenum, silver and zinc. Verification of cerium, rhenium and tungsten. Aromatic primary and secondary amines are examined. Solvents for the determination of relative molecular mass and crystallization. Determination of methoxy. Used as a fixative in microscopic analysis. Manufacture of formates.
9. Formic acid and its aqueous solution can dissolve many metals, metal oxides, hydroxides and salts, and the formate produced can be dissolved in water, so it can be used as a chemical cleaning agent. Formic acid does not contain chloride ions and can be used for cleaning equipment made of stainless steel.
